End of the Trail eBook Dan Rice

End of the Trail is an autobiographical account of Route 66 enthusiast Dan Rice's eight-year struggle with Traumatic Brain Injury. His Hollywood life and high-paced track to a Ph.D. in Psychology was abruptly derailed in 2002 when he suffered severe brain injuries in a near-fatal car accident. A long and painful road to recovery began only after a desperate period of depression, anger, sadness, insomnia, vertigo, suicidal ideations, and an increasing inability to understand the world around him. The book, written about the accident and struggle to recovery is told from the vantage point of Route 66, intertwining Rice's journey to recovery with his lifelong passion for the historic Mother Road that is in its own struggle for survival. The book's title refers to a historic sign that once marked the western end of Route 66 in Santa Monica. To Rice, the sign represents a milestone in his recovery when he overcame all odds and replaced the missing historic sign at the Santa Monica Pier with other Route 66 advocates demonstrating that he is living the life of his dreams in full recovery. Rice explores the desperate conditions he and his family lived in before the injury was diagnosed and as he began his recovery tells also of the story of Route 66. The historic Mother Road's own struggle for survival mirrors Rice's and is used as a metaphor to demonstrate the path of recovery and the importance of raising awareness for the victims and their families. End of the Trail was written to bring needed information, warning signs, and insights to victims and their families, but is also about providing hope and demonstrating that the trail's end is well worth the journey.

Eternal Route 66 Get More Than Kicks
Dan Rice has done an excellent job of bringing the issue of TBI and its treatment to the forefront in a way that the average layman can relate to. He helps us understand the difficulties one encounters when suffering a type of injury that oftentimes neither the patient nor medical professionals know how to effectively diagnose or treat. His story is personal, poignant, and heartwarming. The obstacles he was forced to overcome and how he managed to overcome them when he had no blueprint to follow is nothing short of amazing. Hats off to Dan Rice for sharing this important story of struggle and ultimate triumph!
I first bought "End of the Trail" for some leisurely nighttime reading, but, it didn't stay that way. I actually have found myself talking about it to people that I work with...Have you ever read anything by Mitch Albom? I love his books and I am putting this book in that category. It is a very easy read, and by easy, I mean that in many parts I feel and see Dan's struggle and am sure that anyone reading it would.
Each chapter I found I just wanted to know more. He educated me on traumatic brain injuries and Route 66 both of which I knew very little about. He has very eloquently put words to some very extreme feelings that many people will never experience but, if you have experienced you will never forget.
His recount of Flint and the auto industry in the 70's and 80's mirrors what I remember from growing up near there. It's making me think back and analyze what I didn't realize at the time...what life was like. I also think that people who didn't have the experience I had would still be interested but maybe in a different way. They may see more of the connection or link between his past and what was then his "present." But, either way it all still fits!
Through all of Dan Rice's trials, he managed to shine and it was all for a reason. God clearly had a plan for Dan then and He still has a plan. Dan Rice will touch many people with this book.... I guarantee it!
As a patient recovering from MTBI I found the first part of the book which focuses on the injury and the recovery fascinating. But then it all goes down hill. The part related to Route 66 is confusing and its connection to the story of the injury is unclear, though the end of the book makes it clear it is all about promoting the store in Santa Monica. Many ideas in the book are repeated over and over again, which makes it boring. It looks like the book is patched together. Had to force myself to finish it.
This was a difficult book to get through. The writer takes the long road to get to his point...any point. I couldn't help thinking as I was reading..."get to the point already".
Some points he tries to make seem more intricately involved than necessary. For instance, in the book he was trying to tie in his TBI with his emotional reactions and lack of a "governor" to shut off the aggression but seems to get so much into the details of the events that the "tie in" message is completely lost. Ends up sounding more like venting about the events that made triggered his anger.
It was an arduous task to get to the end of the book. I don't want to sound cruel about his struggles with recovery from TBI, but this getting through this book is like swimming through molasses.
I really felt like I didn't learn much about TBI, but more about his personal family squabbles. Much of the book was the writer trying to drive his point...what ever that may have been. The book ends up branching out in about four different directions and seems to tie up too quickly (and loosely) at the end. About 9/10th personal struggles and family problems, 1/10th TBI.
The intertwining his recovery with the recovery of Route 66 was thin. The point of recovery from TBI is totally lost. This is more of a biography of a troubled life/family history than an inspiring book about recovery. One really has to dig to find useful tidbits on TBI. I found Wikipedia more helpful on the subject.
